Don’t forget training tonight!

Don’t forget, we will be meeting tonight for a socially distanced fitness and movement training session, as announced previously. Please let us know if you are coming!

Bring outdoor sports clothing and water, an exercise mat is also useful.

Our next session will be Thursday.

We are expecting guidelines soon from the BJA as to what a return to mat based training could look like – but we will be dependent on the school allowing hall hire to recommence. Recent news from Croatia after Novak Djokovic hosted a tennis tournament, with several players testing positive afterwards, also flags up the value of a cautious return to sport.

In the meantime, don’t forget you can help us to boost club funds so that we can come back stronger by playing the Portsmouth Lottery or using the Easyfundraising website or app when shopping online – we have recently benefitted from purchases at Amazon, Uber Eats, Dunelm and Ordnance Survey, to name just a few. Signing up now could win us £500!

Outdoor sessions to run twice a week

Following this week’s trial, we will commence outdoor training in earnest next week.

Sessions will run Tuesday and Thursday evening, commencing at 18:30 and run for about an hour. Sessions will remain weather dependent, cancellation notices will be posted on website and our normal social media channels.

We will meet in our usual place at Hilsea Lines, where the bridge crosses over from Highbury College to join Peronne Road.

We will mix it up with some fitness activities and judo movements. Social distancing will be maintained, as will small group sizes in line with Government guidance. To enable this, we appreciate prior notification of attendance to ensure adequate numbers of coaches.

Please wear suitable sports clothing, bring water (it is looking HOT next week) and if you have one, an exercise mat will be beneficial.

A contribution of £2 per head is asked for, this will help to boost club funds for when we are able to return to normal training.

Outdoor training to commence next week

Outdoor training will commence next Tuesday, 16 June, and run every Tuesday until further notice.

Sessions will be weather dependent – cancellation notices will be posted to the website, Facebook and Twitter.

We will meet at our usual venue, by Hilsea Lines, where the bridge crosses over from Higbbury College and joins Peronne Road.

Sessions will commence at 6.30 and run for about 45 minutes to an hour.

There will be no more than 5 players to one coach, in order to comply with Government guidelines. Please register your interest by commenting on this post or on our social media posts.

As social distancing needs to be be maintained, this will not be a judo session. Neither can we share equipment with people outside of household groups. However we will be looking to incorporate some solo judo exercises.

There will be running. There will be press ups. There will be sit ups. There might even be burpees and mountain climbers and squats.

You will need :

  • Running shoes and sports clothing
  • Water bottle
  • A jacket for judo exercises (not necessarily a judo jacket as it may get grass stained)
  • Optionally, an exercise mat.

In order to support club funds, we ask for a £2 per head fee. We are happy to take cash, please try to bring the correct change with you.

We look forward to seeing you.

Possibility of outdoor fitness training sessions

The easing of some restrictions associated with prevention of the spread of coronavirus means that outdoor training becomes a possibility. Latest Government guidance (Cabinet Office, 2020) is

From Monday 1 June, you can exercise or play sport in groups of up to six people from other households, but should only do so where it is possible to maintain a 2 metre gap from those you do not live with.

People who play team sports can meet to train together and do things like conditioning or fitness sessions but they must be in separate groups of no more than six and must be 2 metres apart at all times. While groups could practice ball skills like passing and kicking, equipment sharing should be kept to a minimum and strong hand hygiene practices should be in place before and after. You can also play doubles tennis with people from outside of your household as long as you remain 2 metres apart as far as possible. Any equipment that is used should be cleaned frequently. Cleaning should be particularly thorough if it is to be used by someone else.

And if you are showing coronavirus symptoms, or if you or any of your household are self-isolating, you should stay at home – this is critical to staying safe and saving lives.

This would mean that 5 players could meet with one coach. Larger groups would have to split into smaller groups with sufficient distancing between them.

Is there interest in participating in any such session? These would be similar to the sessions we have run in previous summers, held at Hilsea Creek or possibly Drayton Park as the Creek has become a popular walking spot.

Please use the comments field below to let us know.

Indoor training sessions (especially full contact judo) remain unlikely for non-elite athletes for some time – guidance published by Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport make clear the restraints and conditions that will have to be worked with within elite sport.
