A busy weekend of competition for Court Lane players saw them return with medals from two competitions.
On the Saturday, club coach Kevin Jones returned to competition at the High Wycombe Masters, claiming a bronze medal. This event attracted a strong international entry.
Sunday saw the action shift to Eastleigh, with Mieszko Polak, Jack Rogerson and Azhar Baree all competing in the Split Grade Open.
Mieszko performed admirably in his pool, in the red and yellow belt section, and was unlucky not to progress through to the knock out stages, just not quite amassing enough wins/points.
In the orange/green belt categories –
Jack Rogerson claimed a silver medal at -38kg, proving once again that he is one to watch, with a particularly pleasing ko uchi gari for waza-ari during golden score.
Just missing the cut off point for -42kg, Azhar was forced to move up a weight, to -46kg; then found his group merged with -50kg! He just missed a spectacular gold medal in his weight, a superb throw being launched after a call of matte, and had to settle for silver. He battled hard against the heavier players, and scored a pleasing win his last fight.
A one minute silence was held in honour of Roy Inman OBE.
Final results:
High Wycombe Masters – Kevin Jones, bronze
Hampshire Split Grade Open – Jack Rogerson, silver -38kg (orange/green belts); Azhar Baree, silver -46kg (orange/green belts)
