Back to basics with Olympic medallist Tanabe

Tony, Craig, Kev and Steve travelled to High Wycombe Judo Centre on 12 February for a training session with multiple Olympic and World medallist and six time All-Japan champion Yoko Tanabe.

The day was split into two sessions – ne waza and tachi waza (i.e. ground and standing techniques).

Yoko presented a range of simple, basic but effective techniques that will improve the quality of your judo – techniques which we ruefully wish we had learnt years ago but will be incorporating into our own coaching and practice going forward.

The day was very well supported, with a wide range of grades in attendance.

Great day on the mat

Summer Fair

Once again we made our annual appearance at the school summer fair. With ALL displays being programmed indoors this year, we opted for a smaller mat and a reduced number of players compared to previous years.

A brilliant, slightly ad libbed demo was provided by Kev Jones, Chloe Lymer, Maya and Mieszko Polak and Amy Roberts.

Chloe, Maya and Amy also demonstrated some of the self defence movements from Goshin-Jitsu, with Tony as uke.

We’d also like to say thank you to current and previous club members who watched, and helped to put down and put away mats – Toby Winfield, Ben Lymer and Sophie Rogerson.

Kent International

Michael Churcher was our sole representative at this years’ Kent International.

Making his debut at his new weight of -73kg (and only by a few grams…), Michael showed that all his recent hard work has been paying off, returning with a bronze medal.

New friends made in French twinning events

Coaches and players from Court Lane have participated in recent twinning events with French judo clubs.

In May, Tony, Kev, Craig and Dean (and Brett’s mum!) along with representatives of Holbrook Judo Club, travelled to Royan in the Bordeaux region, for a weekend of Judo, sightseeing and socialising.

We look forward to them visiting us next year.

At the beginning of June, members of Le Havre’s Judo Perrey Guerrier visited the Portsmouth area and were hosted by Holbrook Judo Club.

Members of Portsmouth area judo clubs were invited to join with a training session and friendly competition with the visitors.

13332761_491866707684192_5534276740323114499_nTony, Jonty, Mieszko and Maya represented the club during the morning training session, with Jonty taking part in the afternoon competition.

Hopefully we can visit JPG next year.

Veterans and Split Grade success for Court Lane

medalsA busy weekend of competition for Court Lane players saw them return with medals from two competitions.

On the Saturday, club coach Kevin Jones returned to competition at the High Wycombe Masters, claiming a bronze medal. This event attracted a strong international entry.

Sunday saw the action shift to Eastleigh, with Mieszko Polak, Jack Rogerson and Azhar Baree all competing in the Split Grade Open.

Mieszko performed admirably in his pool, in the red and yellow belt section, and was unlucky not to progress through to the knock out stages, just not quite amassing enough wins/points.

In the orange/green belt categories –

Jack Rogerson claimed a silver medal at -38kg, proving once again that he is one to watch, with a particularly pleasing ko uchi gari for waza-ari during golden score.

Just missing the cut off point for -42kg, Azhar was forced to move up a weight, to -46kg; then found his group merged with -50kg! He just missed a spectacular gold medal in his weight, a superb throw being launched after a call of matte, and had to settle for silver. He battled hard against the heavier players, and scored a pleasing win his last fight.

A one minute silence was held in honour of Roy Inman OBE.

Final results:

High Wycombe Masters – Kevin Jones, bronze

Hampshire Split Grade Open – Jack Rogerson, silver -38kg (orange/green belts); Azhar Baree, silver -46kg (orange/green belts)

End of an era as Havant JudoKwai runs its last session

Steve Anderson posted on Havant Judokwai’s Facebook page earlier:

Back in 1973 my Dad and Tony Lieb opened Havant Judo Kwai and tonight will be the last ever session for the club. Over the years the club has had great success representing Havant Borough, Portsmouth Area, Hampshire, Southern Area and at National Level with ‘bucket loads’ of medals and trophies.

As Head Coach I would like to say a ‘Massive Thank You’ to all club members past and present and also all the volunteers that have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the club running all these years.
A Special Thank You to Kevin Jones for all the years you have helped on the mat as a Great UKE, you have been an awesome asset to the club.

If any of you reading this have a couple of hours to spare tonight we are open from 1900-2100 hours in the gym and it would be great to celebrate the last 41 years with a friendly Judo session (nothing too heavy).

To All Members, Wishing you Great Success at your new clubs, although I will be taking a break from Judo this is not the last you will see of me.

Havant Judo Kwai 1973-2014

Kev in the medals

medals
Kev Jones added another Masters medal to his collection with a bronze in the -100kg event at Saturday’s High Wycombe Masters.

Masters (or Veterans – Sorry Kev!) Judo is one of the fastest growing areas of Judo, with Great Britain having its own Masters squad, and European and World Championships for players. Needless to say, with his usual luck, Kev found himself competing against some of the best players in his age and weight group.
