Jonty mentioned in despatches

Jonty Bassil gets a mention in the Royal Navy Judo Association’s contribution to the British Judo 2023-4 Annual Report, for his part in the National Teams.

This is not the first time the club or associated players have got a mention in BJA publications – the Club was featured several years ago when it received the Sport England Clubmark. Photos of Brett Caswell at the GB World Cup were also used in an annual report, Brett also got several mentions in The World of Judo.

Please ask Kay if you would like to see the 2023-4 Annual Report.

Competition roundup

Due to the pandemic, it’s been a while since we had any competition results to celebrate.

Even when clubs reopened, competitions were a way behind, with players being asked to evidence so many hours of practice beforehand.

Two players associated with the Club have ventured back out onto the competition circuit, with great success.

Jonty Bassil, representing the Royal Navy, won gold at the Samurai club in Kidderminster in October, and picked up points towards his black belt – well done Jonty!

Chloe Lymer joined a team from Holbrook Judo Club to take part in a competition at another Samurai Judo Club, this time in Southampton, returning with a well deserved silver medal.

Congratulations to both players! We hope to see more players returning to competition next year as we continue to come out of the pandemic.

Catching up…

Although the last 12 – 15 months have been hard, it has been great to keep in touch with so many of you – either via social media or bumping into you in the street etc.

We thought it would be nice to briefly update on what some of the club’s former faces are now up to…

John Luijken has relocated with his family to Holland, and is still continuing his judo studies there.

Azhar Baree is studying economics at Southampton Uni – where he bumped into former Court Lane alumni Lewis Dolman on the mat. Lewis has now moved to Birmingham…

Jonty Bassil is joining the Navy, with an aspiration to become a PTI. Best of luck Jonty!

Isla Savellis-Fry has competed her studies at South Downs College, and is offering sports massage at Bodyworx 360 in Leigh Park as well as a mobile service. You can contact her via her her Facebook page – Isla’s Massage Therapy – or her mobile 07389 821386

A good day at the office

The Hampshire Judo organised event on Sunday 7 July saw Court Lane players medal in all three categories.

Jonty Bassil finally secured his first gold medal in the men’s 1st kyu and above competition. Three fine ippons also saw him pick up 30 points towards his Dan grade.

Brother and sister Ben and Chloe Lymer both fought in the junior red & yellow belt competition. This was Ben’s first event, and he did well to hold his own in a surprisingly aggressive group. Chloe battled back from a loss in her first fight to collect a silver medal like her brother.

Michael Churcher continued his transition across to adult judo competing in the men’s blue and under competition. He beat off a strong challenge from a Scorpion player, throwing and holding for a cumulative score. Osaka’s Harrison Grist was once again Mike’s nemesis, leaving Mike in a well deserved 2nd place.

Well done everyone.

Proud day for Court Lane at Hampshire Open

An exciting day of judo at the Hampshire Open saw Isla and Jonty make the transition from junior to adult judo.

Up first however was Jon Luijken, making his competition debut at -46kg. Whilst there was to be no medal on this occasion, he made a determined effort and showed great promise over his three fights.

Jonty, who recently competed in the regional schools qualifier, fought in a packed -71kg category. 17 players delivered some quality judo, with Jonty right in the thick of it. 3 wins from 5 contests – from throws, hold down and an opportunistic arm lock – saw him clinch a well deserved 5th place.

Isla was the lowest graded adult in the women’s -63kg category. Undaunted she delivered her usual all out attacking performance and was rewarded with a bronze medal.

Regular club visitors Michael Churcher and Harry Hopkins were also in action.

Harry competed in the same weight group as Jonty, delivering a lightning fast ippon win in his first fight. He wasn’t able to repeat on this in his next two fights, but still delivered a credible performance.

Michael Churcher had the misfortune to fight his Osaka nemesis Harrison Grist in his first fight. Despite having just competed in a 14 minute golden score contest, Grist still had enough left to secure revenge over Mike for his victory in the Hampshire Closed. Ultimately Mike secured a bronze medal in the junior -66kg.

A great day for the club, with junior players making a strong impact in the adult categories.

Mixed results for Court Lane players

Jonty om Southern Area medal podium

Jonty on Southern Area medal podium

Jonty used the Southern Area Open on 12 November to make his first serious competition outing since 2014.

Fighting at -73kg, Jonty held Zodiac’s Herculas Pretorius for ippon, before facing Tonbridge’s Cameron Bradley for the gold medal. Jonty nearly won the fight in the opening exchanges when he countered Bradley’s uchimata for waza-ari with tani-otoshi.

Bradley carried on attacking, Jonty nearly scoring twice with uchimata sukashi, however it was Bradley who came out on top in the end, throwing Jonty for ippon.

This was a great result, and a well deserved silver medal for Jonty, against two players who were much more experienced than him. Jonty also put up a credible performance against an -81kg player who was added to the -73kg group.

Full results are available online.

Jack Rogerson, who is well on his way to becoming one of our most decorated players, fought a week later at the South Coast u16 Open. By his own admission, Jack turned in a curiously under-par performance and failed to get out of his pool. Never one to be disappointed, JAck is now targeting the Southern Area schools championships in January.

The next session will be held on Friday 15 July, with Court Lane’s own Lewis Dolman as guest coach.

Challenging start to year for Court Lane players

12662523_10153867573871774_2413798890833781935_nCourt Lane players have made a busy start to the year.

Jonty Bassil and Azhar Baree competed at the Green Belt & Under competition in Worthing in January.

Jonty, making his first serious competition appearance for two years, made a strong showing, winning two and losing two to finish fifth, losing the bronze medal fight. Along the way he scored a spectacular 5 second ippon!

Azhar set himself an uphill challenge, losing his first fight. His second fight was far better, Azhar scoring a yuko early on before conceding a waza-ari with seconds left on the clock.

Today saw Xander Harris, Sam Boichot and Mieszko Polak compete in the inaugural Hampshire Junior Team Championships. With only half a team, winning the day was never a realistic prospect, with experience being the main goal. All three players acquitted themselves well, and were a credit to the club.

A big thumbs up for SSE!

Club members celebrate delivery of new tatami

Club members celebrate delivery of new tatami

Court Lane Judo Club recently took delivery of 4 new judo mats kindly donated by SSE as part of their SSE Commonwealth Kits initiative.

The kit funding application was available to all SSE staff providing that their sport was represented at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and Paralympic Games of which SSE was a proud partner and sponsor.

The donation was made possible by the involvement of Simon Bassil, an SSE employee who trains at the Club, as do his children Jonty and Joel.

Club Chairman Tony Brown said, “This has given a welcome boost to our mat maintenance programme, where old mats are replaced by new, and enabled us to increase our mat area to cope with growing numbers, providing improved safety for all Judo players. Thank you SSE.”
