As you are probably all aware by now, the Judo competition scheduled for Saturday 20 June as part of this year’s Hampshire & Isle of Wight Games, was cancelled late on Friday afternoon. Here is the official announcement from Lynn Stringer on Hampshire Judo’s Facebook page:
HAMPSHIRE GAMES – JUDO
Just to let you know, we have decided to postpone the Judo event which was due to be held at Fleming Park Eastleigh tomorrow.
Due to the low level of entries we decided that it wasn’t fair on the children to expect them to turn out for a couple of fights each. Paul [Hamilton – Hampshire Chair], Peter [Blakemore – Competition organiser]and I will be at the Hampshire Judo Committee Meeting on Tuesday, and we will find an [sic] suitable time later in the year to hold the event. This will give all the areas time to hold selection trials, and get a team together. I will send out full details once a decision has been made on the new date.
Apologies for the short notice, but hopefully everyone will benefit from the delay and we will have a great day later in the year.
As soon as I have any more information regarding dates, format I will let you all know.
Apologies for any disappointment and inconvenience caused.
The team is coming together for the Portsmouth entry in this year’s Hampshire & IoW Games.
Confirmed from Court Lane are :
Alex -27kg
Noah -34kg
Maddie -48kg
Noah won his place in a 6 person fight off on 19 May, winning all five of his fights with ippon!
This year’s Hampshire & Isle of Wight Games team tournament will be held at Fleming Park, Eastleigh, on June 20th.
Players must be aged eight and over, but under twelve years, and graded no higher than 6 mon (yellow belt +3 tags), to be eligible to represent Portsmouth. As usual we will be co-operating with Priory Judo Club to field the strongest team we can.
A number of players have expressed interested already and our first session on Tuesday 19 May will feature a round robin contest between Marcus Tree, Samuel and Jacob Boichot, and Fletcher Ellis for a place in the team at 27.1kg – 34kg.
We already have interest at the next weight group up, places at boys -27kg and girls 40.1-48kg are already under offer.
However if any players have not yet registered an interest please do so immediately, to enable us to assign places, arrange trials.
We need to register a Team Declaration by 5 June to be allowed to compete.
Marcus won both his fights, one by ippon and the other by penalties.
Maddy, who was giving away a lot of weight, showed the same spirit in competition as she has shown in training recently.
The journey to Aldershot was nearly as adventurous as last year’s journey home…
The only disappointment on the day was the low entry from other areas, with only four teams entered in the judo tournament – the others being Eastleigh, Hart and Deane and Winchester. Portsmouth was the only area to enter a full team of 9 players, Winchester only having a team of 3.
*Mieszko Polak was also originally entered to compete in this tournament, however we realised late on that no reserves were allowed this year, and we had to advise 4 players that they would not be competing. Our apologies to all affected.
Next competition is the Kent International, which will see Jack Rogerson representing the Club, followed by the Hampshire Open.
Tony and Jon Patterson from Priory Judo Club have been working together to select the team to represent Portsmouth in this year’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Games.
The following players have been selected from Court Lane:
Marcus Tree
Mieszko Polak
Maddy Cox
Good luck to all the contestants!
