Congratulations to Dean Smith, who today claimed a bronze medal at -81kg in the senior Hampshire Open.
Dean Smith made his competition debut for the Club, competing at the South Coast Senior Kyu & Dan Open in Worthing on 19 February.
In a very evenly matched group, Dean won one and lost two contests.
Well done Dean!
The following Court Lane players have had their new grades submitted to the British Judo Association:
Well done to all the players who have successfully graded, remember grades will only be submitted on receipt on the correct grading fee.
Dean Smith and Craig McGeever represented the club at Sunday’s Split Grade competition.
Craig made his competition debut in the boy’s red and yellow belt competition at -30kg. He was narrowly defeated in his first fight, conceding a yuko in the final seconds. His second fight went in to two periods of golden score, before Craig won on a penalty. Unfortunately this was not sufficient to take him through to the knock out stages.
Dean delivered an excellent performance, knocking his first opponent down for waza-ari with o-soto, before scoring a decisive ippon. In his second fight, Dean again looked dominant, and was unfortunate to be caught on the ground with a juji gatame. His third fight was shorter, being thrown for ippon with drop seoi nage. His performance was sufficient to advance him in to third place and a well deserved bronze medal in the adult novice category.
Coaches and players from Court Lane have participated in recent twinning events with French judo clubs.
In May, Tony, Kev, Craig and Dean (and Brett’s mum!) along with representatives of Holbrook Judo Club, travelled to Royan in the Bordeaux region, for a weekend of Judo, sightseeing and socialising.
We look forward to them visiting us next year.
At the beginning of June, members of Le Havre’s Judo Perrey Guerrier visited the Portsmouth area and were hosted by Holbrook Judo Club.
Members of Portsmouth area judo clubs were invited to join with a training session and friendly competition with the visitors.
Tony, Jonty, Mieszko and Maya represented the club during the morning training session, with Jonty taking part in the afternoon competition.
Hopefully we can visit JPG next year.
