We hope everyone is enjoying their summer break – but our thoughts are already turning to the next round of competitions… Here are some you could consider:

19 September

NHC Red Belt Rumble

4 October

Southern Area Senior Ranking

Southern Area Red Belt

18 October

Hampshire Open

As well as being a good competition in its own right, this would also serve nicely as a warm up for Southend…

24-25 October

Southend International

15 November

South Coast -16 Open

As always, please discuss with us first as to whether competition is suitable for your ability and grade. Please let us know if you have entered, so that we can try to support on the day.

If you are competing – you need to be training! Failure to prepare is preparing to fail

Competition opportunities

We have identified a couple of local(ish) competitions that may be of interest.

In November, the South Coast Open will be held in Worthing. This is marked as a Level 3 tournament, so is not suitable for novice players.

In December, there is a minimon (Red and Yellow Belt) competition in High Wycombe. Please note there are some grading requirements on this event.

There are a number of adult events also coming up at High Wycombe and Worthing, full details on BJA or Southern Area websites.

September Competitions

The Club may be shut for the summer, but that doesn’t stop us planning for the future!

There are a number of competitions to consider in September, these would be ideal first competitions for our red belts or an ideal test for our yellow belts who wish to grade up to orange in the autumn, or entertain other competitive aspirations.

First up, is the Red, Yellow and Orange Belt Competition at Dartford, on 14 September. Entry is limited to 150 players, so be quick! Azhar has already been to Dartford, he can tell you what a stunning Judo facility it is!

A week later, it is the South Coast Red and Yellow Belt Rumble at Worthing, Traditionally, the yellow belt section has been very competitive, so a good test! The Red Belt Rumble earlier in the year was cancelled, so please support this event to make sure it doesn’t go the same way.

We are also considering an entry to this year’s Southend International, more details when we return after the summer.

Packing for Competition

Our competition season is about to start, you are heading off to your first competition… what do you take with you?

The essentials
Judo licence – make sure it is in date! You will need to present this at the weigh-in.
Judogi – jacket, belt, trousers. Girls should make sure they also have a plain white t-shirt.
Zori, or other footwear for when you are off the mat.
If you have long hair, you need something non-metallic to tie it back.

Other clothing
A hoodie, sweatshirt or fleece is also good to keep yourself warm. It is not unheard of to see players also wearing gloves and hats between contests.

Food and drink
Difficult this one – players are often too nervous to eat on the day of contest, healthy snack foods are often best – cereal bars, dried fruit etc.

Many nutritionists advise that sports drinks are of limited value; water is just as good for short periods of exercise.

Book, music, games, homework
Something to keep yourself occupied, there can often be a long wait for your weight group to be called, once you have weighed in.
