Golden start to Club’s 25th year

Isla Savellis-Fry made a golden start to the Club’s 25th year with a gold medal at Sunday’s South Coast Split Grade Green Belt & Under competition.

Fighting in the Red & Yellow Belt section, Isla was in dominant form, winning all 4 of her fights with maximum ippon scores. Two of these contests were against players in a heavier weight category who had been combined with Isla’s group.

Isla joins a small group of female medallists from the Club – Kate Borland, Tiffany Caswell, Sophie Read, Sophie Dolman, Sarah Carr and Jess Oakden.

A fantastic start to the year, and a brilliant result for all Isla’s hard work and focus.

Isla wasn’t the only player in action. Jorge Nogueira and Dylan Butcher also contested the Red & Yellow Belt section. Dylan was the lightest player in his weight and had several good fights, although the essential win eluded him. Jorge’s first contest was a short affair, being thrown almost immediately with uchi mata, but in his second contest he held his own for most of the duration.

A good way to start the year!

Vision for success

Brett Caswell throws for Ippon at 2007 GB World Cup

Clearing out my old diaries and other accumulated rubbish in my locker at work, and found this note from Brett Caswell… He has attributed this to American judoka Kevin Asano, who won a bronze at the 1987 World Championships and silver at the 1988 Olympics.

It seemed an appropriate message to share as we end one year, and look forward to our 25th anniversary next year.

Vision for success

v – Vision. First and foremost you need a dream!

I – inspiration. Let desire fuel your fire!

S – Strategy. Develop a plan of action!

I – Initiate. Don’t be afraid of taking risks!

O – Other people. Surround yourself with others who can help you win!

N – Never give up. You need to persevere through the hardships!

…Success will not happen without a focussed, on-purpose, plan of action!

Whether you make it to the Olympics or not is not the main thing in life. When you come right down to it, judo competition is really just a game. Whether you win or lose in competition, life will go on.

The real issue is much deeper. If you have a clear vision for the Olympics, what you do along the journey is more important than the outcome. The lessons you learn. the experiences you gain, and the character you build will determine who becomes a real champion in life. A TRUE CHAMPION IS NOT SO MUCH ONE WHO WEARS A GOLD MEDAL AROUND HI SNECK, BUT ONE WHO WEARS A GOLD MEDAL IN HIS HEART.

New Year randori

The Club re-opens on Tuesday 9 January… but you have a chance to clear away the Christmas cobwebs (and maybe burn a few pounds of Christmas turkey) on Saturday 6, with a randori session at Holbrook Judo Club.

The session will run from 10 to 12 noon at Holbrook Judo Club, Brune Park Community School, Military Road, Gosport and is open to all players, with a mat fee of £5.00.

Hope to see a lot of you there – what a great way to start our 25th year.

Those of you who have ordered judogi, will be able to collect them this week – they were delivered to the Club on Friday.

See you on the mat!

Senior session to close

Regrettably, we have been forced to take the decision to close our adult class, with immediate effect.

Lack of attendance from the players we were hoping to build this session around, allied to other players moving away, makes it unfeasible to offer this session at the moment.

To hire a hall and have no or maybe only 1 player turn up, does not make sense financially or for our own motivation

We hope at some point to be able to offer an adult session again. In the meantime, adult sessions can be found at:

  • Fort Purbrook Judo Club
  • Priory Judo Club
  • Meridian Judo Club
  • Gosport Judo Club
  • Holbrook Judo Club

Our junior classes are unaffected and continue to thrive as we head into our 25th year.

Hampshire Closed to return in 2018

Hampshire Judo will once again be hosting a Closed tournament in 2018.

The date has been provisionally set for 4 March, with medallists being invited to attend future Hampshire squad sessions.

In our 25th year, it would be great to see a large entry for this event – it has traditionally been a successful event for Court Lane. Azhar and Jack (with a 10 fight epic in 2016) have been amongst our most recent medallists.
